On Tuesday night, the Lyrids align with the April full moon, otherwise known as the "pink moon," which will rise at 7:49 p.m. It's a stunning sight all on its own, but seeing it during a meteor shower is a rare astronomical opportunity. The Airbus plane had previously been used by King Charles, Queen Camilla, and other UK officials. AdvertisementA plane used by VIPs like King Charles and Queen Camilla had to make an emergency landing after three windowpanes fell out mid-flight. The lights, used to convey a sunrise, had been aimed at the windows for several hours at a time, the report said. A hole burned through one of the windows while five other windows were deformed after 2,000W lights were used, the report said. If high-intensity lights were used, it suggested keeping use to a minimum and away from windows.

The relatively limited scope of Israel’s overnight strikes on Iran, and a subdued response from Iranian officials, may have lowered the chances of an immediate escalation in fighting between the two countries, analysts said Friday. For days, there have been fears that a forceful Israeli response to Iran’s attack on southern Israel last weekend could prompt an even more aggressive riposte from Iran, potentially turning a tit-for-tat confrontation into a wider war. But when it finally came early on Friday, Israel’s strike appeared less damaging than expected, allowing Iranian officials and state-run news outlets to downplay its significance, at least at first. By sunrise, Iranian state-run news outlets were projecting a swift return to normality, broadcasting footage of calm street scenes, while officials publicly dismissed the impact of the attack. But the initial Iranian reaction suggested that Iran’s leaders would not rush to respond, despite warning in recent days that they would react forcefully and swiftly to any Israeli strike.

Queer and transgender Muslims came together to break their Ramadan fasts. But for queer and transgender Muslims, this practice of ummah, or the connectedness Muslims feel while exercising their faith together, has often made them feel excluded from traditional Ramadan celebrations. Courtesy of Dinean RobinsonThe iftar — which included prayers led by a queer Muslim community member named Shiffa, and joyful drag-queen performances — was just one of many ways queer and transgender Muslims fostered community this Ramadan. Dena Igusti celebrated this Ramadan with fellow queer Muslims, saying it helped them get back in touch with their faith. In New York City, queer Muslims joined in song and dance at the LGBT Community Center's iftar to celebrate their layered identities.

Alain BeechingThe researchers also reviewed skeletons found at other archaeological sites across Europe and identified 20 other probable instances of similar sacrificial killings. The practice may have been relatively widespread in Neolithic, or late Stone Age, Europe, according to the study, published in the journal Science Advances last week. The study said the actual number was probably higher but there was insufficient information about skeletons at other archaeological sites to draw firm conclusions. The three skeletons were buried in a grave built in the style of a silo, where grain is typically stored, inside a wooden structure and surrounded by a trench. At the other sites across Europe, men and children as well as women were also found sacrificed in this way, the study said.

The bullet-scarred pickups raced the sunrise along a rough dirt road wending through a dense pine forest. Multiple languages were spoken by the men inside them — Ukrainian, Brazilian, Colombian, Polish — but few words. They had come to fight Russians. The trucks barely came to a halt to discharge their passengers before speeding off again. Armed drones might appear overhead at any moment, and so as the men continued on foot, they, too, did so with urgency.

There are three types of space tourism companies now vying to open up this experience to the wealthy, the superwealthy and the out-of-this-world wealthy. HALO SpaceLast week in London, HALO Space CEO Carlos Mira unveiled the interior design for its Aurora space capsule, which his team hopes will transport 10,000 passengers to near-space by 2030. HALO Space declared at the presentation that it’s offering “new, safe and zero-emissions alternatives to space flights,” and having already completed five successful test flights, that it’s the most advanced company in its sector. Within a very limited space, comfortable seating, generous viewing windows, storage areas and, most importantly, a toilet cubicle all had to be integrated. Flights will launch pre-dawn, so that guests can experience a “white” sunrise at the edge of the stratosphere with the deep black of space beyond.

People watch the first sunrise of the new year from a footbridge overlooking the city skyline in Seoul on January 1, 2024. The opposition Democratic Party (DP), which already dominates the 300-member legislature, has accused Yoon and his conservative People Power Party (PPP) of mismanaging the economy and failing to rein in inflation during their time in office. PPP leader Han Dong-hoon said a big win by the DP, whose leader is facing corruption charges, would create a crisis for the country. He warned against giving the opposition an unprecedented super majority of 200 seats, which would strip Yoon of his veto power. "I hope the two-party structure will be broken somehow, and politicians will carry out practical policies for ordinary people."

CNN —When the total solar eclipse traces a path across Mexico, the United States and Canada on April 8, spectators can anticipate a multitude of awe-inspiring moments. For those living outside of the path of totality, a crescent-shaped partial eclipse, rather than a total eclipse, will be the main event. The diamond ring effect is seen during the total solar eclipse on August 21, 2017, in St. Louis, Missouri. President Joe Biden this month made climate jobs a major focus of his reelection bid. The administration plans to launch the American Climate Corps this summer with about 20,000 workers, but the funding is pieced together from various federal agencies. These prospective voters are also the target hires for the American Climate Corps, which will focus on reducing greenhouse-gas pollution in local communities and making them more resilient to extreme weather. Stevie O'Hanlon, a spokesperson for the Sunrise Movement, which mobilizes young voters focused on the climate, said the launch of the American Climate Corps was a big win. But the chances of Congress approving more funding for the workforce program are slim, given that House Republicans last year tried to block any federal spending for the American Climate Corps.

America's first commercial-scale offshore wind farm is officially open, a long-awaited moment that helps pave the way for a succession of large wind farms. The Biden administration has approved six commercial-scale offshore wind energy projects, and auctioned lease areas for offshore wind for the first time off the Pacific and Gulf of Mexico coasts. Ørsted CEO Mads Nipper called the opening a major milestone that proves large offshore wind farms can be built, both in the United States and in other countries with little or no offshore wind energy currently. The first U.S. offshore wind farm was supposed to be a project off the coast of Massachusetts known as Cape Wind. The nation's second large offshore wind farm, Vineyard Wind, is expected to open later this year off the coast of Massachusetts, too.
